How to Use a LM317 Voltage Regulator

How to use a cheap LM317 adjustable / variable voltage regulator

In this tutorial, I will show you how to use a LM317 voltage regulator for your DIY electronic projects. This module is also known as a buck converter, step down power supply or DC-DC linear regulator. You can buy one easily online. These modules are inexpensive. In addition, they include everything you need like connectors, a small heat sink, and an adjustable voltage power output.

How to use a LM317 voltage regulator?

Using the LM317 buck converter is very simple because you only have to connect it to a power supply. I used a DC 12V 6A power supply with a LED connector. Firstly, you should plug the V (in) and the ground to the positive and negative end of the connector, respectively. Then, you can simply check the output current using a multimeter and adjust the voltage by turning the screw.

It is a step-down converter, which means that you can select any value below the power supply capacity. But keep in mind that a large power difference between input and output can cause the device to heat. The heat sink can get very hot although the specs provided by the manufacturer indicate that it can handle a 40VDC difference. It is also stated that the output voltage can vary between 1.2 and 37 V with an output current of 1.5A. Therefore, please be cautious not to burn yourself or get an electrical shock.

Buying LM317 modules with LED screen display vs basic buck converter module ?

You are thinking about buying other LM317-based modules that have an integrated LED screen displaying the voltage output? Then, you should consider that for the price difference you could get a cheap multimeter. It can do the same and is also one of the most useful electronic tools you should buy. Please see my review of the DT830b multimeter for more information.

What you can do with a buck converter step-down voltage regulator

In conclusion, it’s a great solution for using the same power supply with multiple devices needing different voltages. Moreover, the LM317 module enables you to control different devices like an Arduino or an esp8266 (3.3V). You can also adjust the speed of a computer fan or the light intensity of a LED by controlling the output voltage. You can also use the LM317 voltage regulator with an ATX breakout board to build your own variable lab bench power supply.
