Check this complete rock tumbling guide and find the best rock tumbler for beginners, kids and professionals. Let’s now see how to polish rocks like a pro!

What is a rock tumbler?

A rock tumbler is a machine used to polish hard rocks and gemstones such as quartz, agate, and jasper. Rock tumblers generally consist of a rotating barrel containing a mixture of rocks, grit, and water. As the barrel rotates, the friction will erode the surface of the rock and gradually polish it.

This process used for polishing rocks mimics what is naturally happening when rocks are rolling on the beach because of the waves. A rock tumbler enables you to shorten this process and obtain perfectly polished rocks and stones in only a few weeks!

How to polish rocks using rock tumblers?

It is very easy to polish rocks using a rock tumbler. In fact, even kids can use a rock tumbler. This is indeed a good way to initiate kids that are 8 years and older to science, STEM, and more specifically geology. They will definitely enjoy using a rock tumbler to polish their favorite rocks gathered from rock hounding trips in your area.

The complete process of rock polishing doesn’t require much work. However, you need to be patient in order to obtain perfectly polished rocks. In general, a succession of 4 different types of grit is used to polish rocks.

The process starts by using coarse grinds then followed by finer grinds. To obtain perfectly polished rocks, an aluminum oxide powder is often used as the last step. Each of these rock tumbling steps requires 5 days to a little over a week depending on the type of rocks used and if the edges of the rocks were already smooth in the first place. Overall, the polishing process takes about a month.

How to fill a rock tumbler – General instructions

In order to polish rocks, all you need to do is to mix your rock samples with the appropriate amount of grit. As a general rule of thumb, you should use 1 or 2 tablespoons of grit per pound of rock. The number of rocks should also correspond to approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the barrel capacity. For example, a barrel with a capacity of 3 pounds is good for 1.5 to 2 pounds of rocks. It is also important that you don’t completely fill the barrel. In total, the grit, water, and rock should only fill about 2/3 of the rock tumbler’s capacity.

Best rock tumblers for sale

There are several types of rock tumblers available for sale. While the general principle remains the same, there are some important features to consider before buying a rock tumbler. For instance, the type of motor and the composition of the barrel can help to reduce the noise and can greatly influence the overall quality of a rock tumbler. Some models have a timer function with programmed rock tumbling cycles. Different sizes are also available with a capacity ranging from 1 pound to up to 15 pounds for large rock tumblers. As you can see, there are many interesting features that can make the difference between a starter kit and more professional rock tumblers.
